If you smell gas, stop reading and leave the building. Do not flip switches, do not use the phone inside, and do not go looking for the source. Get outside, then call Colorado Springs Utilities from a safe distance. A suspected leak is a utility emergency call first and a contractor call second.
With that said, here is what gas line work costs in this market.
Most residential gas work is a short run, and short runs sit at the inexpensive end of the trade. Adding a line to a range, dryer, or water heater that sits within reach of adequately sized existing piping typically runs somewhere between $350 and $800. A longer interior run, across the house or up a floor through finished space, typically lands between $800 and $2,000.
Outdoors, a line out to a grill, fire pit, or patio heater typically runs $500 to $1,500 depending on how far it goes and what it has to cross. A trenched run out to a detached garage or shop typically runs $1,500 to $4,000, with the trench length doing most of the work on that number.
Larger scopes: upsizing the main house line or repiping an older gas system typically runs $2,000 to $6,000, and leak detection and repair typically runs $150 to $700 depending on whether the piping is exposed, buried, or inside a finished wall.
Every one of those is a typical market range for our area rather than a quote, and gas work deserves that caveat more than any other trade on this site. The same nominal job at two houses on the same street can differ by a factor of three, and the reason is almost always sizing rather than labor rates.
Three numbers determine what pipe a gas system needs: the total connected load in BTU of every appliance the system serves, the developed length of pipe from the meter to the furthest appliance including the equivalent length of every fitting, and the allowable pressure drop across that run. Those three set the required diameter.
The consequence is that adding one appliance can change the whole system. A tankless water heater is the usual example, because it draws several times the input of the tank unit it replaces. A half-inch branch that has fed a laundry dryer without complaint for twenty years may be nowhere near adequate once a high-input appliance lands on it, and correcting that can mean running a larger line back toward the meter rather than just teeing off nearby. In some cases the meter and regulator have to be upsized, which involves the utility and their schedule.
That is the difference between a $400 job and a $3,000 one, and it is invisible from the driveway. It is also why an honest gas quote follows a look at the meter, the existing piping, and the nameplate ratings of everything already connected.

A good share of gas line calls are cheaper than the caller expects, and some are not jobs at all.
The one place we will not tell you to save money is on the decision to do it yourself. Gas piping is one of the few home systems where a mistake does not produce a leak in the ordinary sense, it produces a carbon monoxide risk or an explosion risk, and neither one gives you much warning. It is also permitted work, and unpermitted gas piping is a problem at resale and a possible complication on an insurance claim.

Black iron pipe is the traditional choice: rigid, threaded, durable, and slow to install because every joint is cut, threaded, and made up individually. In an accessible basement it is often the most economical answer anyway.
CSST, corrugated stainless steel tubing, is flexible and routes through joist bays and around obstacles the way wiring does, which cuts labor dramatically on long runs through finished space. It has one requirement that gets missed by unqualified installers: CSST must be bonded per code. That bonding is what protects the tubing from damage caused by a nearby lightning strike, and it is not optional. If you have CSST in your house and are not sure it was bonded, that is worth verifying.
Gas appliances lose input capacity as elevation increases, and manufacturers publish derate tables and high-altitude conversion kits for exactly that reason. At 6,035 feet, an appliance installed at factory sea-level settings will not perform the way the label promises. That is an appliance setup issue rather than a piping issue, but it lands in the same conversation, and it is the reason a new appliance sometimes disappoints even though the gas line is perfectly adequate.
Fire pits and outdoor kitchens are popular here, and exterior runs live in ground that freezes, thaws, and moves. They need the correct materials, adequate depth, corrosion protection, tracer wire so the line can be located later, and a shutoff where you can actually reach it. Cutting corners on an exterior run is how a line ends up unlocatable in ten years.
Gas piping work requires a permit and inspection through the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department, and new work gets pressure tested and held before it is put into service. That process is a feature, not friction: an inspected gas system is documented, and documentation is what you want when you sell the house.
Any excavation on your property, including fence posts and tree planting, calls for a utility locate first. It is free, it is required, and gas services run through more yards than most people assume.
