- On valves and seals. Anything with a moving part in contact with water accumulates deposits, which is why fill valves and cartridges wear faster in hard water.
- In the laundry and the shower. Soap and detergent bind to hardness minerals instead of lathering, so people use more of both and clothes come out stiffer.

Test Before You Buy

- A shower head filter if the complaint is skin and hair rather than plumbing.
- An inline scale filter ahead of a tankless unit if protecting that specific appliance is the actual goal. It is a fraction of the cost of a whole-house system.
- Check the water heater's anode rod at the intervals the manufacturer recommends. It is the sacrificial part that protects the tank, and in hard water it does its job faster.
The case for a whole-house softener gets strong when hardness is at the upper end here, when you have a tankless unit or expensive fixtures to protect, when someone in the house has skin that reacts to hard water, or when you are simply tired of the maintenance and would rather buy the problem away. Softener Versus Conditioner
These are sold interchangeably and they do different things.
A salt-based ion-exchange softener actually removes calcium and magnesium, trading them for sodium on a resin bed and periodically flushing the accumulated hardness to drain with a brine solution. The water leaving it is genuinely soft: it lathers, it leaves no spots, and it deposits nothing.
A salt-free conditioner, most commonly template-assisted crystallization, does not remove anything. It converts dissolved hardness into microscopic crystals that stay suspended and are much less inclined to stick to surfaces. Scale formation drops substantially, but the minerals are still in the water, so you will still see some spotting and you will not get the slick feel or the soap savings.
Pick the conditioner if you want scale protection with no salt, no drain line, no electricity, and near-zero maintenance, or if sodium is a concern. Pick the softener if you want the full effect and do not mind hauling salt. Neither is a filter, and neither improves taste or removes contaminants, which is what a separate filtration stage or a reverse osmosis unit at the sink is for.
What Drives the Installed Price
- Whether a soft-water loop exists. Many newer homes here were plumbed with a loop in the garage or basement, which makes installation straightforward. Without one, the incoming line has to be rerouted to the unit and back, and that plumbing is most of the price difference.
- Grain capacity and tank configuration. Sized from your hardness and water use. Twin-tank systems provide soft water continuously through regeneration and cost more than single-tank units.
- Metered versus timer regeneration. Metered units regenerate based on actual water used, which saves salt and water compared to a timer that runs on a schedule whether you were home or not. Worth the difference.
- Drain access. The unit needs somewhere to discharge brine with a proper air gap. Distance from a suitable drain matters.
- Power. A receptacle near the unit, which sometimes means electrical work.

Living With One
