How Much Does Sump Pump Installation Cost in Colorado Springs? (2026 Guide)

Those are typical market ranges for our area, not a quote. But this is one of the few plumbing topics where the most useful advice is to slow down, because a good share of the wet basements in this town do not have a sump pump problem at all.
Do You Actually Need a Sump Pump?
Colorado Springs is semi-arid. Plenty of homes here have no sump pump, have never had one, and never will need one. Before spending money on a pump, spend an afternoon on the outside of the house, because surface water is the usual culprit and it is far cheaper to redirect than to pump.
- Extend the downspouts. A downspout dumping at the foundation puts hundreds of gallons directly against the wall during one summer storm. Extensions cost a few dollars each and should carry water six to ten feet out. This fixes more basement water in this town than pumps do.
- Clean the gutters. An overflowing gutter is a downspout that is not working at all.
- Check the grade. Soil should fall away from the house for the first several feet. Settled backfill that has created a shallow bowl against the foundation is extremely common, and adding soil to re-slope it is a wheelbarrow job.
- Look at window wells. Wells without covers or without functioning drains fill up and then push water through the window frame.
- Look uphill. Where does your neighbor's downspout point, and where does the driveway drain?
If water shows up only during heavy rain and only in one spot, it is almost always surface water and the fix is outside. A sump pump becomes the right answer when water is coming up through the slab or the wall-floor joint, when the water table rises seasonally on your lot, when a perimeter drain already exists and needs somewhere to discharge, or when there is finished space below grade that cannot tolerate any water at all.

The jump between the first row and the third is almost entirely concrete and dirt. If a pit already exists, this is a modest job. If it does not, someone is cutting your slab.
What Drives the Price
- Whether a pit already exists. The single biggest factor. Breaking out concrete, excavating a basin, setting it in gravel, and patching the slab is most of the cost of a first-time installation.
- Pump type and quality. Submersible pumps sit in the water and run quieter; pedestal pumps sit above it and are easier to service. Cast iron housings shed heat better than plastic and last longer. Horsepower should match the lift and the volume, not the biggest number on the shelf.
- The switch. This is what actually fails on most pumps. A vertical float in a properly sized basin is more reliable than a tethered float in a narrow one, where the float can hang up on the wall or the piping.
- Power at the pit. A sump pump needs its own receptacle, and in an older basement there frequently is not one. That is electrical work bundled into a plumbing job.
- Where the discharge goes. Distance, elevation, and freeze protection. Long runs cost more and work worse.
- Backup. A battery system, a water-powered system, or nothing. This is a judgment call about what is stored down there.

Three Things That Are Specific to Here
The discharge line freezes
This is the local failure mode, and it is the one that ruins basements. A discharge line that runs along the ground, has a low spot, pitches back toward the house, or terminates in a buried pipe will freeze solid in a cold snap. The pump then runs against a plug of ice, which either burns out the motor or backs water up into the pit and over the top.
A discharge that survives a Colorado winter has continuous fall away from the house, no long horizontal runs sitting at grade, and either a freeze-relief fitting or an air gap near the house so that when the far end does freeze, the water still has somewhere to go. Radon comes up through an open pit
El Paso County sits in EPA Radon Zone 1, and an open sump pit is a direct opening between the soil under your slab and the air in your house. If you have a radon mitigation system, or expect to install one, the pit needs a sealed, gasketed lid with proper grommets where the discharge pipe and the power cord pass through. An unsealed pit can undercut a mitigation system that is otherwise working correctly, and a mitigation system often ties into the pit deliberately as its suction point.

Storms here arrive all at once
Our precipitation does not fall gently across a week. It shows up as intense summer downpours, and it lands on clay soils that shed water rather than absorb it quickly. A pump that keeps up with a steady seep may not keep up with an inch of rain in forty minutes, and that is also exactly when the power is most likely to go out. If there is finished space or anything valuable below grade, a backup pump is not an upsell.
Where the Water Is Allowed to Go
Sump discharge belongs outside, away from the foundation, and directed so it does not run back toward the house or onto a neighbor's property. It does not belong in the sanitary sewer. Tying a sump into the sewer is generally prohibited, and beyond the rule, it is a good way to send storm water into a system that is not sized for it and to create backups. If your discharge currently ties into a floor drain or a laundry standpipe, that is worth correcting.
Keeping It Working
- Test it quarterly. Pour five gallons of water into the pit and watch the pump start, move water, and shut off. That is the entire maintenance routine, and it catches the failed switch before the storm does.
- Check the discharge outside at the start of winter and again after the first hard freeze.
- Look in the pit. Silt and gravel accumulate and shorten pump life. A pit with a proper lid stays much cleaner.
- Replace on schedule rather than on failure. Sump pumps generally run somewhere in the range of seven to ten years. Replacing a fifteen-year-old pump in September costs less than replacing it in August with water on the floor.
- Know that the pump is not waterproofing. It removes water that has already arrived. Grading, gutters, and drainage are what keep it from arriving.
