Do You Actually Need a Sump Pump?

Three Things That Are Specific to Here

The discharge line freezes

This is the local failure mode, and it is the one that ruins basements. A discharge line that runs along the ground, has a low spot, pitches back toward the house, or terminates in a buried pipe will freeze solid in a cold snap. The pump then runs against a plug of ice, which either burns out the motor or backs water up into the pit and over the top.

A discharge that survives a Colorado winter has continuous fall away from the house, no long horizontal runs sitting at grade, and either a freeze-relief fitting or an air gap near the house so that when the far end does freeze, the water still has somewhere to go. Radon comes up through an open pit

If you have a radon mitigation system, or expect to install one, the pit needs a sealed, gasketed lid with proper grommets where the discharge pipe and the power cord pass through. An unsealed pit can undercut a mitigation system that is otherwise working correctly, and a mitigation system often ties into the pit deliberately as its suction point.
