How Much Does an Electrical Panel Upgrade Cost in Colorado Springs? (2026 Guide)

Those are typical market ranges for our area, not a quote. And the reason all three are listed together is that a lot of homeowners ask for the most expensive one when they need the cheapest one. "I am out of breaker spaces" and "I am out of electrical service" are different problems with a fourfold price difference between them.
When a Subpanel Beats a Full Upgrade
This section goes first because it is the one that saves people the most money.
Your panel does two things: it holds breakers, and it distributes the amperage your service brings in. Running out of the first has nothing to do with the second. If your home already has a 200 amp service and the panel is simply full, you do not need a service upgrade. You need spaces, and there are cheaper ways to get them:
- A subpanel. A feeder from the main panel to a second, smaller panel gives you a block of new spaces, and it is usually the right answer when the new circuits are headed for one area, such as a basement finish, a garage, or a shop.
- Tandem breakers, where the panel is rated to accept them. Some panels are, many are not, and the label inside the door says which. This is not a judgment call to make by eye.
- Consolidating what is already there. Older panels frequently have circuits that no longer serve anything, or two circuits doubled onto one breaker in a way that is both unsafe and wasteful of space.
Before assuming you need more amperage, get a load calculation. It adds up the actual demand of your home against the service size, and most Colorado Springs homes with gas heat, a gas water heater, and a gas range do not come close to using their existing service. What changes that math is a large new load: an EV charger, a heat pump, a hot tub, a shop with a welder or a compressor, or an all-electric conversion. Those are real reasons to upgrade. "The panel looks old" by itself is not, and neither is "the box is full."

Read the bottom half of that table as a menu rather than a list of surprises. The add-on rows are where two quotes for "the same job" diverge, and they are worth asking about explicitly before you compare numbers.
Reasons to Actually Replace a Panel
Some panels should be replaced regardless of whether you need more capacity.
- Known problem equipment. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels are widely regarded in the trade as prone to breakers that fail to trip under fault. Many home inspectors flag them on sight and some insurers ask about them. If you have one, replacement is a safety decision rather than a capacity decision.
- Fuse panels. A working fuse box is not automatically dangerous, but it is usually attached to a small service, cloth-insulated branch wiring, and a bypassed fuse or two.
- Rust or water intrusion in the enclosure. Especially in exterior-mounted panels.
- Double-tapped breakers, undersized conductors, or missing knockouts throughout. Individually each is a repair. Collectively they mean the panel has been worked on repeatedly by people who were guessing.
- Overheating signs. Discolored breakers, a scorch mark, a burning smell, or a panel that is warm to the touch. That is a call today, not a quote next month.
- Aluminum branch wiring landing in the panel. Common in homes built in the late 1960s and 1970s. It has specific handling requirements and it changes the scope of any panel work.
What Drives the Price
- Service size and whether the service actually changes. A like-for-like swap reuses the existing service conductors, meter, and mast. Going from 100 to 200 amps usually means new conductors and a new meter socket, and that is most of the price difference.
- Overhead versus underground. Overhead services are cheaper to modify. Converting to underground means trenching, conduit, and coordination, and it is a different project entirely.
- Utility coordination. Colorado Springs Utilities has to disconnect and reconnect the service, and their scheduling window is part of the job timeline. This is the most common reason a panel job takes longer than the electrical work itself would suggest.
- Panel location. An accessible panel on an unfinished basement wall is straightforward. One buried behind finished drywall, in a closet, or in a location that no longer meets working-clearance requirements may have to move, and moving it means extending every circuit that lands in it.
- What comes along for the ride. Current code requires arc-fault and ground-fault protection on circuits that older panels never had it on, and a new panel is where that gets applied. Older homes also frequently need grounding electrode work, because the original ground was a bond to a metal water line that has since been partially replaced with plastic. That is a real and common finding here, and it is not padding.

What Is Specific to Colorado Springs
The utility is the schedule
Colorado Springs Utilities is the electric provider here, which means the disconnect and reconnect is coordinated with a single municipal utility rather than negotiated across providers. That is generally a good thing. It also means the calendar is theirs, and a panel replacement is planned around their window plus the building department inspection rather than around whichever day is convenient.
Older housing stock with small services
Homes in the Old North End, Patty Jewett, and the Westside were built for a fraction of the electrical load a modern household runs. Sixty and one hundred amp services are common in that stock, along with original fuse panels, cloth-insulated wiring, and grounding arrangements that predate current requirements. None of that is an emergency by itself. It does mean a panel job in an older neighborhood tends to uncover more than a panel job in a 1998 subdivision, and a good contractor tells you that up front instead of discovering it on the invoice.
Detached garages and shops
Detached structures are common on lots here, and they are frequently fed by a feeder that was adequate for a light and an outlet and is not adequate for a compressor, a welder, a heater, or an EV charger. That feeder, not the main panel, is often the real constraint.
Exterior equipment and weather
Meter sockets and exterior panels here take sun, wind-driven snow, and a large daily temperature swing. Corroded or loose connections at the meter show up as flickering lights and intermittent problems that look like a panel issue and are not.
Electrification is what is driving demand
Almost every legitimate service upgrade we see traces back to one of four things: an EV charger, a heat pump or mini-split system, a hot tub, or a shop. If none of those is in your plan, the odds that you need more amperage are low.
What the Day Looks Like
Plan on the power being off for most of a working day. The old panel comes out, the new one goes in, every circuit is landed and labeled, the grounding and bonding is brought to current requirements, and the utility reconnects. The inspection follows, sometimes same-day and sometimes not. If the panel is being relocated or the service size is changing, add time.
One thing worth saying plainly: this is not a DIY project, and not for the usual liability reasons. The service conductors feeding the panel remain energized when the main breaker is off. There is no switch inside your house that makes those safe. That part of the work belongs to a licensed electrician working with the utility, full stop.
