In the Colorado Springs market, replacing a residential central air conditioning system typically runs $5,000 to $9,500 installed for standard-efficiency equipment, and $8,000 to $14,000 for high-efficiency two-stage or variable-speed systems. Replacing the AC and furnace together typically runs $10,000 to $18,000, which is normally less than doing them as two separate jobs a few years apart.
Those are typical market ranges for our area, not a quote. The number that surprises people is that AC replacement is quoted as a system. You usually cannot just swap the outdoor unit and keep everything else, and the reason has to do with how the two halves are matched.
There is also a genuinely local angle here: Colorado Springs has a short cooling season and very dry air, which changes the value of paying up for efficiency. We get into that below, because it is where most homeowners here are talked into spending more than they need to.

A central AC system has two halves. The condenser sits outside. The evaporator coil sits inside, usually on top of the furnace, connected by a refrigerant line set. Those two halves are engineered and rated as a matched pair.
Put a new high-efficiency condenser on an old coil and you do not get the rated efficiency, you get some lower number that nobody has tested. Performance suffers, and depending on the equipment it can affect the warranty. So when a quote covers a condenser, a coil, and often the line set, that is not padding. That is the job.
The exception is a genuinely young system with a failed component, where repairing the specific part is the right call. That is a repair conversation, not a replacement one.
Bigger systems cost more, but bigger is not better. An oversized AC cools the house quickly, shuts off, and cycles again, and short cycles are hard on the compressor. Correct sizing comes from a load calculation that accounts for the intense solar gain through south and west-facing windows at this elevation.
The jump from a standard single-stage system to two-stage or variable-speed is the biggest single line item you control. Read the section below before you decide how far up that ladder to climb here.
An evaporator coil sitting on a furnace in an open basement is a straightforward replacement. A coil in a tight attic air handler is not, and the labor reflects it.
Sometimes the existing refrigerant lines can be cleaned and reused. Sometimes they are the wrong size for the new equipment, or contaminated from a compressor burnout, and they have to go. Running new line set through finished walls is where this gets expensive.
New systems sometimes need a different breaker size or an updated disconnect at the unit. Older homes occasionally need more than that. Our electricians handle it in-house rather than subbing it out.
If your system is old enough to use R-22, that changes the math. R-22 is no longer produced or imported in the United States, and what remains is reclaimed stock. A leaking R-22 system is expensive to keep charged, and every year the argument for putting money into it gets weaker.
The industry has also moved on to newer, lower global-warming-potential refrigerants in new residential equipment. Those are not cross-compatible with older systems, which is another reason a new outdoor unit cannot simply bolt onto old indoor equipment.
The practical takeaway: if you have an R-22 system with a refrigerant leak, get a replacement quote alongside the repair quote before you decide. If you have a newer system with a leak, find and fix the leak. Recharging a leaking system every season is the most expensive way to own air conditioning.

Thinner air carries less heat per cubic foot, so the outdoor coil cannot reject heat as efficiently as it would at sea level. Effective cooling capacity drops on the order of 5 to 10% at our elevation. That is a sizing consideration, not a reason to buy a bigger unit than the load calculation calls for.
Summer relative humidity here typically runs in the 15 to 30% range, far below what eastern and southern cities deal with. Air conditioning normally spends a significant share of its capacity pulling moisture out of the air. Here it does not have to, so more of the system's capacity goes to actual cooling. This is also why evaporative cooling is viable in this climate and useless in humid ones.
Summer highs here typically sit in the 85 to 90°F range with cool nights, and the stretch where you genuinely need air conditioning is a fraction of the year. Efficiency premiums pay back through hours of runtime. Fewer runtime hours means a longer payback on the same upgrade. The high-efficiency system that pays for itself in Phoenix or Houston takes considerably longer to do so here.
The Front Range sees serious hail, and outdoor condenser coils are vulnerable to it. Bent coil fins reduce efficiency, and severe hail damage is often a covered insurance claim. If you are installing new equipment, it is worth asking about coil guards and worth photographing the unit after installation so you have a record if you ever file a claim.
Being straight about this costs us jobs and we would rather keep the trust.
Do not replace a working system because it is old. A 14-year-old AC that still cools the house and holds its charge is not a problem to be solved. Replace it when it fails or when repair costs stop making sense, not on a calendar.
Do not replace over a low charge without finding the leak. Refrigerant is not consumed. If a system is low, it leaked, and the leak has a location. Anyone who tops off the charge and does not look for the leak is selling you the same problem again next summer.
Do not assume a dead outdoor unit means a new system. Capacitors, contactors, and fan motors fail regularly and are ordinary repairs. In the Colorado Springs market, common AC repairs of that kind typically run a few hundred dollars. A capacitor failure and a compressor failure produce similar symptoms to a homeowner and very different bills.
Check the easy things first. A filthy filter, a blocked outdoor unit, a tripped breaker, or a thermostat set to fan-on instead of auto all produce complaints that sound like a failing system.
And if you are already replacing the furnace, that is the moment to price the AC too. Doing both at once shares the labor, the crane or lift if one is needed, and the permit trip. Doing them three years apart does not.
